Factors Affecting Efficiency of CNC Press Brake Machine

Factors Affecting Efficiency of CNC Press Brake Machine

Productivity, accuracy, and performance are determined by the efficiency of the CNC press brake machine used during the metal fabrication process. These advanced machines provide precise bending operations; however, many different factors may affect how efficiently these machines operate. Mechanical presses used for bending metal sheets require a multitude of inputs to operate efficiently. Inputs may include machine condition, operator skill, methods used for processing parts, quality of input material, accuracy of measurements, environmental conditions, and performance of tooling, among others.

Mechanical presses’ effectiveness is influenced by all input materials. Even minor deviations in one area will cause longer cycle times than other areas, increase waste, and decrease the quality of the end product manufactured by CNC press brake machine manufacturer. Thus, in today’s modern manufacturing environment, highlighting and analysing all inputs related to mechanical press operation will allow for an efficient use of resources, fewer errors, and ultimately produce consistent results.

1. Machine (Equipment Issues)

Mechanical problems can greatly reduce the productivity of a CNC press brake machine since even small faults can create large amounts of downtime and significant inaccuracies. Continuous wear and tear on hydraulic components can cause a loss in pressure, cause hydraulic components to perform inconsistently, and cause hydraulic components to wear out early. If the back gauge system is calibrated poorly, then that will directly affect (negatively) the precision of bends made by the CNC press brake machine. Inconsistent ram movement and/or misalignment can also create defective bends and waste material.

CNC machines need to have the most current software so they can use their advanced features as quickly as possible. When a CNC machine has outdated software, it may hinder performance by slowing down the machine; this will cause premature wear and tear on the entire machine. Moving parts require proper lubrication to minimize friction and create excessive heat; this will only cause additional wear and deterioration of all components, including the moving parts. Also, if a tool is not clamped securely to the CNC machine, it can slip out of place and cause the tool to become loose and unsafe.

Regular maintenance, timely software duplication, and proper calibration are vital to helping reduce the number of mechanical issues that will create an inefficient machine operating at its maximum potential productivity.

2. Man (Operator Factors)

There are numerous operator-related factors that affect the effectiveness of the CNC press brake machine. Human error may create inaccuracies or inefficiencies as well as have a direct effect on overall productivity.

Operators are often unable to program the CNC properly or input data efficiently due to lack of understanding and knowledge of CNC programming. Failure to correctly configure the CNC machine will result in bending defects which will also result in loss of material. Materials handled improperly will create inconsistent products.

Scheduled checks will help prevent minor breakdowns from becoming major problems or cause machines to be out of service. A machine operator who doesn’t have basic tool-selection skills will experience poor bending performance, contributing to excessive tool wear.

3. Method (Process & Procedures)

Inefficient CNC press brake machine operation can greatly affect machine efficiency can occur with process and method issues/designs when not managed correctly. The most significant factor affecting efficiency is the improper bending sequence of the part, leading to unnecessary part repositioning, longer cycle times, and increased potential for errors.

The improper method of bending (e.g. air bending, bottoming, coin) will lead to either inaccurate bends with the risk of tool damage or excess force will be required to bend the part. Without having standard operating procedures (SOP) in place creates a lack of consistency in operating methods resulting in outcomes based on the subjective techniques of individual operators, not defined operating standards. Inefficient workflow planning can also create delays experienced through the material handling of the parts and decrease productivity, while ineffective quality control checks allow defective parts to pass through the production process causing increased rework and waste.

To achieve consistent and efficient machine performance structured processes, clear SOPs, and robust quality control checks should be established.

4. Material

Factors related to materials influence accuracy and efficiency of CNC press brake machines due to the presence of inconsistencies in the raw materials causing defective products and more rework. Variations in thickness can cause inconsistent dilemmas as well as problems with keeping accurate angles when bending a part. Low-quality raw materials or contamination with debris create surface cracks and damage in the bending process.

Improper choice of raw material (type) in relation to specific applications can also have implications for formability and eventually performance. Any defect on the outer surfaces of a part like a scratch or rust will impact a bend’s dimension. Inconsistent raw material properties (yield strength, modulus of elasticity, etc.) can lead to varying results during the bending process. Raw material properties must be of high quality, uniform, and conform to industry standards and equivalent measurements if a consistent, repeatable, and reliable bending process is to be established.

5. Measurement (Accuracy & Inspection)

If measurement and inspection-related problems are not managed appropriately, this can negatively affect the efficiency and accuracy of CNC press brake machines. For instance, poor-quality measuring tools result in incorrect bend angles and therefore dimensional errors. Additionally, improperly calibrated sensors yield inconsistent feedback from CNC press brake operations and, therefore, inconsistent output from the CNC press brake.

Since there are no real-time monitoring systems being used during operations, it is difficult to identify deviations while an operation is taking place; therefore, increasing the probability of producing defects. Also, human error introduced during measurement may cause a lack of precision during manual measurements. Because quality can only be confirmed at the end of the production process, defective parts may go undetected; thus, requiring rework, resulting in wasted materials.

To maintain consistent quality and operational efficiency, it is important to have properly calibrated measuring instruments, regular calibration of those instruments, and automated inspection systems.

6. Environment (Work Conditions)

The efficiency and performance of a CNC press brake may be affected by environmental conditions of CNC press brake machine manufacturer if they are not maintained correctly. For example, changes in the temperature can impact the viscosity of the hydraulic oil thus affecting the accuracy of the machine, resulting in inconsistent bends.

Dust and debris in the work area can obstruct the capability of parts and sensors from moving freely resulting in wear and malfunction. Low levels of light will lead to poor visibility for the operator which increases the possibility of an error when setting up or inspecting. An inconsistent source of power may also cause the machine to stop unexpectedly and cause loss of data or damage to electronic pieces.

Vibrations caused by improper installation of the machine can impair the precision and alignment of the operation as well. Therefore, providing a clean, lighted work area with stable environmental conditions and following correct installation practices will promote reliable and efficient performance.

7. Tooling (Dies & Punches)

Tooling is essential for both the speed and accuracy of any CNC press brake machines; therefore, any issues with either punches or dies will adversely affect the production quality of all your parts. Worn-out punches and dies will produce parts that have inconsistent bend quality, dimensional accuracy and surface defects. In addition, selecting the wrong tooling for a particular material (or type of bend) could produce improper force distribution during operation as well as potentially damaging tooling.

Improperly aligned tooling will further affect the accuracy of the bends resulting in increased number of rejected parts. Additionally, low-quality tooling materials will have a shorter lifespan and reduced capability when compared to higher-quality tooling materials.

A failure to perform standard routine machine and tooling maintenance will result in excessive wear and increase the probability of an unexpected machine tool failure. Accurately selecting, aligning and maintaining machine tools will help provide a consistent level of production quality and raise the efficiency of the machines used in production operations.

Conclusion

The efficiency of a CNC press brake machine relies heavily on four components: the condition of the equipment, operator skill, process control, as well as material quality. By performing regular maintenance, providing training for operators, implementing standardized procedures and providing high quality tooling to the operator can all contribute to improved productivity and a decrease in error rates.
